Nene X-ing

Photobucket
While Jess and I were visiting the main island of Hawaii, we saw these signs all over. Watch out for the Nene Bird!! Apparently, they are killed by cars very often.
And just in case you are thinking you are too busy to watch out for the Nene, they even put a picture of lil Nene gosling just to pull at the right heartstring to make you wanna keep you eyes peeled.
I wanted to see one so bad! I was sure we would, as there were signs everywhere, but no. No Nene.
I just had to see this thing. I mean all the beautiful, rare, tropical birds of Hawaii, and they choose A GOOSE as their state bird!! That must be one majestic goose!
~
Jess in case you don't know has moved her lil self and Maggie back to the East Coast. They will be settling down in Virginia for the next leg of their adventures. One kid born in Hawaii and one in Viginia. Hmmmm. I smell a rivalry coming on.

I love signs like this: they remind us to slow down and enjoy the scenery. If only we weren't always in such a rush...

This photo would fit nicely with this week's Thematic Photographic theme on my blog. We're doing signs this week. Got any more to share?

I'd never heard of a Nene before Jenn, but I looked it up and they kind of remind me of a Canadian Goose.

It appears they were near extinction in the 50's but have since made somewhat of a comeback. Hence the reason for the signs I imagine, and the reason you didn't see any : )

I've seen nenes (not in the wild but in a wildfowl reserve). They are quite wonderful. I love signs like this too because they remind you to look out at nature, but at the same time, it only reinforces the disappointment if you don't see the species mentioned....

I have a picture of the nene I need to send you, and another sign for you. I had to pull over on the side of the road and take the picture because it reminded me so much of you. It's on my hard drive at home, so as soon as I get there it's yours. Miss you!

I love reading your blog (I'm a Navy wife in Hawaii!)and we've also been to Big Island and I always bug DH to stop and look for Nene's but we've never seen one either! (except at the Honolulu zoo!)
